John Kavanagh

John Kavanagh was born at Askintinny, Arklow on 12 June 1896, the eldest child of Denis Kavanagh and Julia Reilly. His birth was attended by Anne Kearon of Halls Lane and officially registered on 27 July 1896.

1901 Census

On the night of the census, four-years-old John was living with his grandparents, John and Elizabeth Kavanagh in Askintinny. His parents' primary household was at Proby's Row, Arklow.

1911 Census

By age fourteen, John was living in Ballinabanoge as a live-in farm servant on the holding of Thomas and Julia Byrne.

Marriage to Mary Anne Byrne

On 26th December 1934, John married Mary Anne Byrne at the Roman Catholic Church of Arklow. John, who had previously been recorded living in Ballinabanogue in 1911, was residing at the family homeplace in Askintinny at the time of the wedding and working as a sailor. Mary Anne was living in nearby Ballinabanogue, the daughter of labourer James Byrne. 

The ceremony was solemnised by Parish Priest Michael Behan, with James Byrne and Mary Farrell standing as witnesses.
