William Kavanagh

William Kavanagh was born c1888 in Tinahask, Arklow, to fisherman Thomas Kavanagh and Jane Murray. While a formal civil birth record has not been found, a common occurrence in late 19th-century Irish records, his childhood is firmly documented through other records.

He grew up surrounded by the tight-knit network of seafaring families who populated the terraces of lower Tinahask, learning the family trade as he watched his father and uncles work the Irish Sea.

1901 Census

William is recorded living with his parents John and Jane and siblings Thomas, Mary, Laurence and Sarah at House 2, Tinahask Lower, Arklow.

1911 Census

A decade later, a twenty-three-year-old William is still residing in the family home, recorded at House 43, Tinahask Street Lower. Following in his father's footsteps, he is recorded as a Fisherman.

Marriage to Sarah Kinsella

On 28 October 1925 at the Roman Catholic Church of Arklow, William married Sarah Kinsella. At the time of his marriage, William was recorded working as a Sailor, residing at Abbey Street, Arklow. His father is confirmed as Thomas Kavanagh, a Fisherman. Sarah Kinsella was residing at River Lane, Arklow, daughter of James Kinsella, a Fisherman.

The ceremony was officiated by Fr. Eugene McSweeney C.C., with William's brother, Laurence Kavanagh, and Kathleen Hackett serving as official witnesses.

1926 Census

William was not in Arklow at the time of the 1926 census. Sarah is recorded living in River Lane with her mother, Bridget.
