William Kavanagh was born at Ecawn, Arklow, on 3 October 1907, the son of Denis Kavanagh and Julia Reilly. His birth was registered on 30 December 1907 by midwife Sarah Massey of Fair Green, who was present at the birth.
William was listed as living in Household 11, Rock Big with his parents and seven siblings; Patrick, Lizzie, Denis, Mary, James, Edward and Michael.
Eighteen-year-old William was residing with his parents and seven brothers at Askintinny, Arklow. He was listed as being at school.
On 30 December 1946, William married Anna Mary Roche at the Catholic Church in Arklow.
At the time of their marriage, William was working as a seaman and living at Askintinny, Arklow, while Anna Mary was residing at 15 Mary O'Connor Place, Arklow, the daughter of labourer Thomas Roche.
The ceremony was officiated by Fr. John J. Seely, C.C., and witnessed by William's brother Michael Kavanagh and Esther Giblin.
