Mary Kavanagh

Mary Kavanagh was a daughter of John Kavanagh and Elizabeth Death, born into the rural farming and seafaring community of Askintinny, near Arklow.

Mary was baptised in Arklow Parish on 3 May 1857. Her godparents were Michael Byrne and Hannah Byrne, reflecting close family ties within the local community.

Growing up in Askintinny, Mary spent her childhood in the coastal townlands just south of Arklow. As was typical for young women of her generation, she entered domestic employment at a very young age, recorded as working as a servant while still in her mid-teens.

On 4 January 1873, Mary passed away at home in Askintinny at just fifteen years of age. The age recorded on recorded on her civil death registration was "16". The cause of death notes that she succumbed to dropsy (fluid retention associated with heart or kidney conditions) after a two-week illness.

Her father, John Kavanagh, was present when she died. He registered her death at the local registrar's office on 10 February 1873.
